Environmental Protection By The Papua Community Limits Opm's Movement

PAPUA - The Presidential Instruction of the Republic of Indonesia Number 9 of 2020, a crucial legal framework, guides the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) in their duties in the Papua region. Under this law, the TNI HABEMA Operations Command and all Task Forces of the Indonesia-PNG Mobile Border Security Operation actively conduct regional protection to implement security support tasks. A stable and conducive security situation is the target that must be achieved by implementing regional protection tasks. This is important considering that there are still security disturbances by the Free Papua Movement Organization (OPM), a separatist group that often conducts violent activities in the Papua region. The OPM security disturbances certainly hinder the acceleration of welfare development in Papua.

In order to achieve a stable and conducive security situation, the HABEMA Operations Command has some Territorial activities, one of which is implemented in the form of Regional Resilience Development (Bintahwil). Through these Bintahwil activities, the HABEMA strives to create a space, tools, and conditions for a strong environment and can maintain a stable and conducive security situation independently by all stakeholders, including the community. The implementation of HABEMA's Bintahwil activities has been seen in the pronouncement of several pledges, including the pledges to return to the Republic of Indonesia by OPM sympathizers and the pledge of residents to fight OPM in Sugapa District, all in early September 2024.

Furthermore, on Wednesday (18/9) the HABEMA Task Forces received a report from residents of Mamba Village, Sugapa District. The report explains the actions of the Mamba residents who have successfully limited the OPM's movement in their area. These actions were carried out by the Mamba residents who had pledged to fight the OPM. Subsequently, the residents followed up on their pledge by burning down a Honai, a traditional Papuan house, that had been used as a transit point for OPM before conducting disturbances in the Sugapa District. This act symbolized the community's rejection of OPM's presence and their commitment to maintaining security in their area.

After receiving the activity report, the HABEMA Commanding General, Brigadier General Lucky Avianto, acknowledged the Mamba residents’ initiative to limit the movement of OPM in their area. Their initiative, which involved reporting OPM activities and burning down a transit point, is a testament to TNI's commitment to provide protection support through Regional Resilience Development activities to support the acceleration of development in the Papua region. This acknowledgment from the highest authority in HABEMA underscores the significant impact of such initiatives on the region's development. It instills profound hope and optimism about their potential to shape the region's future positively. It makes the Task Forces and the community feel recognized and appreciated for their efforts.
